The Embassy compound is situated in the diplomatic area Sanlitun, about 6 km northeast of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. It was designed by the Norwegian architect Rolf Ramm Østgaard and completed in 1972. The residence of the Ambassador is also situated in the Embassy compound.
The Embassy has a total staff of 40, half of which are Norwegian, half Chinese. The Ambassador is H.E. Mr. Svein O. Sæther, and the Deputy Chief of Mission is Counsellor Mr. Kjell Tormod Pettersen.
The Embassy's mission is, in close co-operation with the Consulate General in Shanghai and the Consulate General in Guangzhou, to further enhance and promote the relations between Norway and China, in line with the Norwegian Government's China Strategy and annual Work Plans. The Embassy's responsibilities cover a wide range of activities, including political and business visits, political and economic reporting, promotion of economic co-operation and trade, co-operation within environmental protection, developement cooperation programs and events to enhance cultural co-operation, consular work and visas. Innovation Norway and Norwegian Seafood Export Counsil are represented through the Embassy's commercial section.
