Visit to China by H. E. Mr. Svein Ludvigsen Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs from June 23 to 26, 2005.

Mr. Svein Ludvigsen, Minister, Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, visited China from June 23 to 26 2005 at the invitation of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China.

The general purpose of his visit was to further promote the good relationship between Norway and the People’s Republic of China, and more specifically, in the fisheries’ sector.

He had meetings with Director Li Changjiang of AQSIQ, as well as with Vice Minister Niu Dun of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Cooperation on food safety issues, bilateral trade, and developments under the Sino-Norwegian Agreement on Fisheries was high on his agenda.

In his capacity as Minister of Coastal Affairs with responsibility for Norwegian ports, he also had a meeting with Minister Liu Zhijun, Ministry of Railways.. This to discuss developments related to the Northern East West (N.E.W.) Freight Corridor that goes from China westwards to the United States with the Norwegian city of Narvik as the port for reloading between sea and rail. 

The Minister also attended the opening of a joint Sino- Norwegian seminar related to Seafood Safety held at the Great Hall of the People on June 24th. 

Mr. Ludvigsen ended his trip in China with a visit to Hangzhou. There he had talks with representatives of Zhejiang's provincial government, Deputy Party Secretary Zhou Guofu, and visited the Royal Supreme Seafood plant and aquaculture for crayfish, shrimp and freshwater fish.

The Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs was very pleased with his stay. Although the visit was short, he had meetings with all the relevant counterparts. All parties reiterated their interest in further Sino-Norwegian cooperation.
