Norwegian artist Marian Heyerdahl exhibits female teracotta warriors at 798

Marian Heyerdahl opens her exhibition at 798 Space Sunday on 25 February at 15:00. The exhibition consists of 70 female teraccotta warriors modelled after China ’s famous Teracotta soldiers in Xian, capital of northwest China 's Shaanxi Province .

For three months Heyerdahl has been living next door to the farmer who found the famous array of clay soldiers on the outskirts of Xi'an, working with a local factory to produce the sculptures.

Like the original soldiers made more than two millennia ago, Heyerdahl's soldiers each have a different facial expression. Some have their mouths open as if they're screaming, others have their eyes closed in fear, some are smiling and some are pregnant. From behind the warriors have retained the original uniform and hairstyle but the artist has been re-sculpting the fronts of the statues by adding female attributes.

The female warriors will be on show from 25 February to 10 March in Space 798, the largest gallery in Beijing's alternative art community at Dashanzi.
