30 June 2009 Hainan and the China Southern Power Grid (CSG) celebrated Hainan's connection to the mainland power grid. The 30 km submarine power link, constructed and installed by Nexans Norway, has a capacity of 500 kV and is the first of its kind in China. The project is a collaboration between China Southern Power Grid and Nexans Norway and has been running for more than two years.

During the period 2006-2010, the Norwegian government will give NOK 250 million (EUR 31,3 million) more to aid poor nations avoid internal struggles over oil. "Oil for Development" was launched in 2005 and aims to help developing nations better manage their oil resources.
