Hainan province has experienced solid economic growth since it was established as a province and Special Economic Zone in 1988. It has developed its industrial base, consolidated its position as a world class holiday destination and developed a base for high-efficiency agriculture and aquaculture.
This far, Hainan has been self-sufficient with power, but the expansion of industry and tourist trade at the island have lead to a higher consumption of power. In addition, bad weather has caused frequent black-outs during the typhoon season. The Nexans project of linking Hainan with Guangdong will ensure a safe, stable and efficient supply of power to the island, providing a basis for future growth and development.

Nexans is one of the leading cable manufacturers in the world. Due to the exceptional qualities of the cable, Nexans is one of a few companies worldwide capable of carrying out a project of this kind. The cable has been installed by Nexans’ own cable ship, the Skagerrak, purpose-built for installing cables on the sea floor. The project has also employed several of Nexans’ own technologies, among them the Capjet and Spider. These are robots clearing the seabed and installing the cable.
– This project has been an excellent example of how Norwegian technology can contribute to the further development of South China, says Consul General Tormod C. Endresen. To install and operate cables, pipe-lines and oil and gas production facilities on the sea floor is a Norwegian specialty, thanks to our experience as an oil and gas nation. This project is one of many where we share our knowledge and technology in these fields. I am convinced that we will see more Sino-Norwegian partnerships in the oil, gas and maritime sectors in the time ahead.
