Visit to China by the Norwegian Minister of Finance

Last updated: 03/08/2010 // Norway’s Minister of Finance Mr. Sigbjørn Johnsen visited China in the period 10-14 April, on invitation from China’s Minister of Finance Xie Xuren.

The ministers discussed matters of economic policy and economic sustainability. They also exchanged views on the latest development in the Chinese and Norwegian economies. In addition, the Minister held meetings with the chief of the Chinese Central Bank, Zhou Xiaochuan, vice-minister Liu Tienan of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Lou Jiwei, leader of China Investment Coorporation (CIC).

Talks primarily revolved around an exchange of views on the outlook for the global economy and lessons from the financial crisis. Other topics that were discussed included International cooperation on economic and financial issues, including potential Sino-Norwegian collaboration, as well as the role of the G20, and issues and experiences related to the Sovereign Wealth Funds of Norway and China.

“Both China and Norway are long-term investors and face many of the same challenges in terms of managing large Sovereign Wealth Fund”, Johnsen said. “We have been cooperating closely in the establishing the Santiago principles, and will continue this cooperation in the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds (IFSWF).”

 In Shanghai, Minister Johnsen’s schedule included a visit to the Norwegian pavilion at the Expo site, where he was given a guided tour by Mr. Commissioner General Arild Blixrud.

He also visited the Shanghai stock exchange, where he gave a speech in which he addressed Norway’s plans for extended Sino-Norwegian trade and commerce in the years to come. The atmosphere was light amongst the audience, as the Minister disclosed these ambitions.

Before leaving back to Norway, The Minister gave a cheerful speech to the Norwegian Business Association, where he described the Norwegian Economy in bright colors.
