Family or Friend Visit

If you intend to stay in Norway/Schengen for less than 90 days to visit family or friends, you are advised to apply for a short-term visa. Maximum period of stay is 90 days.

Please note that all applicants for Family and Friend Visit Visa should apply in person.

The Embassy may contact the applicant to request additional documents/information or to have an interview.

Visa application:

A case processing fee must be paid for visa applications, whatever the outcome. The fee must be paid when you submit your application.

Processing Time:

The normal visa processing time is 15 calendar days.

Required documents:

Prepare all the necessary documents listed below before you deliver the application to the Embassy, otherwise the application might be refused.

All documents must be presented in the original; all the documents have to be translated into English or Norwegian; If necessary the verification should be made by Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Note: Two sets of the application should be handed in to the embassy in the following order:

  1. Applicant's passport, valid for at least 90 days after expiry of the visa.
  2. 2 passport photos not older than six months (see left side of the page for photo requirements).
  3. Application form for Schengen area duly completed.
  4. Applicant's "Family Information Form", duly completed.
  5. The invitation letter issued by the reference/inviter stating the purpose of the visit.
  6. Copy of the reference passport and copy of the reference's residence permit (if the reference person is not a Norwegian citizen).
  7. Documents confirming employment, school or studies and permission for leave. 
  8. A guarantee form from the reference person (must be verified by the police in Norway) with one extra copy, or financial guarantee from the applicant.
  9. Documentation of relationship if family visit: The original notarial certificate stating the relationship between the applicant and reference (i.e. marriage certificate or birth certificate, whichever is applicable).
  10. Documentation proving change of name (if any).
  11. Copy of applicant's passport (all relevant and used pages).
  12. For Chinese Citizens: Hukou in the original, with a photocopy of all the pages (only applicable to private passport holders).
  13. For other citizens: valid Chinese residence permit.
  14. Applicant's Authorization Form" duly completed (optional).
  15. Applicant's "Report Form" duly completed.
  16.  Valid  travel/health insurance for the duration of the stay in the Schengen Area with a minimum coverage of EURO 30.000. Original + one photocopy.

If you are under 18, you must also submit:

  • An original and a copy of letter of consent signed by both parents - If you are travelling alone.
  • An original and a copy of letter of consent from the other parent - If you are travelling with only one of your parents.
  • A shown original and a copy of certificate of single custody - If the parent you are travelling with has single custody (UDI circular 2004-018 OPA).

The Embassy reserves the right to request additional information/document and, if deemed necessary, to interview the applicant.

Please note that when a visa has been granted, applicants are required to provide valid airpane tickets in original and in photocopy in order to obtain their visa. After delivering the ticket to the Embassy, the Embassy will notify when your visa is ready for pick-up (normally within 2 days).
