Sino-Norwegian Architecture Forum in Xi’an

The 3rd annual Sino-Norwegian Architecture Forum in Xi’an was held this week, with great success. Students and professors from various universities, including Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology (XAUAT), Tsinghua University and People’s University in Beijing, were present. In addition, Xi’an Urban Planning Bureau as well as a number of architects from both countries took part in the event.


The programme consisted of six outstanding lectures by leading architects from both Norway and China. Amongst the keynote speakers was partner and director at renowned Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta, Robert Greenwood, with his lecture "Snohetta Works". From Norway Olav Kristoffersen - founding partner of Brendeland & Kristoffersen Architects and Johanne Borthne- architect and partner at Superunion Architects took part in the event. From the Chinese side Liu Jiakun - the founder and chief architect of Jiakun Architects, Liu Kecheng - Dean of School of Architecture, XAUAT, and Mu Jun, a young architect specialized in low-cost sustainable architectures in the northwest China and associate professor at XAUAT, althogether provided a rounded insight into contemporary architecture.

The Forum project has been evolving over the last three years, as part of the NTNU collaboration with  XAUAT and now includes the involvement of the Chinese magazine Community Design, which is published by Tsinghua University.

Plans are already being made for next year’s event. In addition, material is currently being collected for a special edition of Community Design, which will present discussions regarding contemporary architecture in Norway and China. This is due to be published on the 10th of December.
