A Long-Distance Relationship

Last updated: 16/03/2011 // ArtXchange is a Sino-Norwegian exchange project between the Norwegian studio compound Lista Fyr and its Chinese counterpart Huantie Times. The first part of the project will open 26 March 2011 as three Norwegian visual artists and one pianist unveil the exhibition “Distance” at the White Box Museum in Beijing’s 798 art district

The three Norwegian artists participating in the project are Alfred Vaagsvold, Elin Høyland, and Christian Sunde. Sunde will show a sculpture installation consisting of a large group of small heads caging tiny light diodes. Painter Alfred Vaagsvold is taking a different approach to the exchange aspect of the project, and will challenge his own creativity by showcasing works in progress. Photographer Elin Høyland is planning to take photographs during her stay in China that will be on display both at the Beijing show and alongside the works of the Chinese partners in Norway this summer. In May 2011, the Chinese artists Sun Xun, Li Xu, and Gao Xiang will travel to Gallery Lista Fyr on the south coast of Norway to complete the project with a second show.

Brothers

At the White Box Museum, Høyland will among other things show prints from her latest publication “The Brothers” published by British Dewi Lewis Publishing .“The Brothers” tell the story of two brothers who have spent their entire lives together in a small town, capturing one last glimpse of a Norwegian culture that is about to disappear.

From Romantic to Contemporary with a Folkloristic Twist

As part of the exchange project, renowned Norwegian pianist Rune Alver will be giving concerts at the White Box Museum 26, 27, 28 March. Alver was born in Bergen and received his musical education at the Bergen Conservatory of Music and the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo, and has performed extensively across Europe. In cohesion with ArtXchange, he will be performing two musical interpretations of Henrik Ibsen`s play “Peer Gynt” by respectively Edward Grieg and Harald Sæverud, pieces by Geirr Tveitt based on Norwegian folk music, and recently recorded ”Blue Traces” by contemporary Norwegian composer Torstein Aagaard-Nielsen.
