Imagine waking up tomorrow without recalling today. All recollections are deleted. Imagine living without a background history, without recognizing those who know you. Imagine encountering the world as if it was for the first time. And finally, imagine this happening to you while travelling alone on a train in China. This is what happened to a Norwegian man, also the main character of the film -
Hunting Down Memory.
Norwegian Øyvind Aamot’s first memory in life was speaking Chinese on a train in China at age 27, and anything happened before was "wiped out of his hard-drive" as 20 brain specialists who later examined him described his retrograde amnesia. This 80-minute movie recorded his journey of discovering what had happened in the three missing weeks before his memory vanished, events of which he had no recollection and that caused his amnesia.
‘People would point to me and call me waiguoren (foreigner), and I’d say ‘OK, I’m a waiguoren’, but I didn’t know what that concept meant’, Øyvind Aamot, main character of Hunting Down Memory said at an interview with China Daily.
Hunting Down Memory was shown on this year’s NORDOX (Nordic Documentary Film Festival Nov.21- Dec. 5 2009 in Beijing). Now it comes to Guangzhou 2009 International Documentary Film Festival, and will be screened 6 times during the GZDOC.
