More than 40 people, including scholars, critics, actors, stage directors, artists and editors coming from the UK, USA, Brazil, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Australia, Finland and China attended the seminar which opened in Hong Kong from November 19th and relocated to Guangdong University of Foreign Studies on the 22nd November. This is the first time an Ibsen seminar of such international level has been held in Southern China.
Due to the different backgrounds of the attendees, the seminar offered new and culturally different perspectives in the interpretation of Ibsen’s modern self conception in drama and in changes of time. It discussed how characters in Ibsen’s play develop from prospects such as gender, self consciousness and feminist awakening. The conference also sought to explore different representations and manifestations of the modern self in Ibsen’s plays, as well as how Ibsen’s conceptions of the new self have led to revolutions and transformations in modernist culture within and beyond the European context.
At the end of the seminar, Norwegian Consul General Mr. Tormod C. Endresen invited the participants to his residence for dinner. Mr. Endresen said he was very happy to have the privilege of receiving researchers from all over the world and exchanging views and perspectives with them. He looks forward to similar cultural events in the future.
