This book was first published in English in 2001, but has now been translated into Chinese and Tibetan language. “The Lhasa Atlas” is a landmark collection of images of the architecture, townscape and topography of the ancient capital of Tibet. The book is the result of a joint academic effort facilitated by the ‘Network for University Cooperation Tibet-Norway’, established in 1994, which is a collaboration between four Norwegian universities and higher research education institutions in Tibet. This research cooperation has contributed to the development of new insight into the environment, culture and society of Tibet, and assisted the exchange of Tibetan and Norwegian students and researchers. This outstanding study of ancient Lhasa is a testimony of this rewarding research exchange.
The launch was a very successful event, with authors, TAR representatives and specialists within the field present, as well as media.
This magnificent book, which depicts a journey through old and future Lhasa, will be available for sale in bookstores all over China, and the Norwegian Embassy will also donate 1800 copies of the book to libraries, universities, research institutions and governmental institutions throughout China.
