The idea behind NOtCH is to expose two distinct cultures – Nordic and Chinese – to each other’s music and art as a way to better link the two cultures. The festival will be held in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, featuring more than 20 Scandinavian musicians and artists, playing everything from free jazz to psychedelic folk to electronic pop music.
NOTCH10’s theme is called “RE:PUBLIC”, by inviting Nordic and Chinese creative groups to form an innovative “republic” to re-define the public space and value in the fast changing Chinese society. RE:PUBLIC is the evolution from ID-ENTITY, theme of NOTCH09, which explores the nature of multi-identity creative persons forming their own entity.
The Norwegian line-up for NOtCH 2010 in Shanghai consists of ‘Annie’, and the groups ‘Needlepoint’ and ‘Mungolian Jet Set’. These artists will play together with Chinese bands at Mao Live House in Shanghai on the 9th and the 12th of October, before heading to Beijing to play on the 15th of October. Finally, the artists are scheduled to play in Guangzhou on the 16th of October.
In the occasion of Expo in Shanghai 2010, NOtCH 2010 will also have concerts at the European Square at Expo. The Norwegian bands Needlepoint and Mungolian Jet Set will play at the stage on the 10th of October.
The NOtCH festival originated in 2006, and is positioned as a non-profit cultural project that was founded by Beijing-based Lei Yang. The name NOtCH comes from marrying the initial letters of the words ‘Nordic’ and ‘China’.
