In May 2009 “Call for Green China”, an international conference and performance on environmental protection, will be held in China. The four cities that have been chosen for this performance is Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan and Changsha, which are big economic cities in East, Central and South China. One of the main goals is to raise environmental awareness among the wider public, and to help people make environmentally friendly decisions and choices in daily life.
International, national and provincial experts as well as officials from relative departments will be invited to the conference. Recommendations and suggestions on environmental issues and challenges concerned by both central and local government will be presented. Perspectives of the cooperation in environment between China and the World Bank will be discussed.
In connection with the international conference, a unique cultural environmental awareness raising performance focusing on environmental protection will be presented. It consists of a shortened version of the Ibsen drama "An Enemy of the People" and a multi-media concerto with themes from the Yellow River Piano Concerto performed by top notch Chinese and Norwegian artists.
“An Enemy of the People” will be performed by leading Chinese actors and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra conducted by the Norwegian Terje Mikkelsen. The background photo images during the play are supplied by the Norwegian artist Jørn Steen. The multi-media concerto will be performed by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Chinese pianist Ms. Chen Sha, synchronized with a film by John Liu. In addition, a number of compositions by Keith Emerson and other artists, made exclusively for this tour, will be performed by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
