Chinese/Norwegian Co-production at the 4th Beijing Fringe Theatre Festival

Last updated: 08/09/2011 // Beijing-based Elephant in the Room Theatre Company’s flagship play “Facehook” is playing at the Fengchao Theatre in Beijing on 13 and 14 September 2011. The play is written by Norwegian dramatist Ms. Oda Fiskum and performed in a mix of English and Chinese by a professional cast of local and European actors.

Founded in 2008 by the “father of Chinese avant-garde theatre” Meng Jinghui, the Beijing Fringe Theatre Festival is today the largest independent theatre festival in China.  The 2011 run is by far the most international yet, with all the Scandinavian countries represented.

The play “Facehook” delves into the topic of how online social networking communities such as Facebook, Twitter, and their Chinese equivalents Renren Wang and Sina Weibo, are changing the way people communicate, see themselves, and to some extent even the way they think. It was first performed in Beijing in June 2010.

The director Mr. Fabrizio Massini and Ms. Oda Fiskum started making theatre together while studying at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, where they founded Elephant in the Room. Their plays start with a common concept which is first discussed to pieces, put together as a text by Oda, ripped apart again by Fabrizio in rehearsal, and glued back together again by both as a final mise-en-scene.
