Last updated: 13/07/2010 // Henrik Ibsen’s drama Little Eyolf will be staged in Shanghai mid this month, by a local drama group who call themselves 802 Theatre Studio. With support from the Norwegian Consulate General in Shanghai, the play has been interpreted and adapted to the Chinese stage by art director Peter Liu, who is a graduate from Shanghai Theatre Academy of performing arts.

Although written more than a hundred years ago, Little Eyolf touches upon issues that are just as relevant in today’s world. The play reflects on the existential question of deciding what one’s life should be, and learning to balance personal ambitions against responsibilities towards one’s family. It is also a story about failing, guilt and loss of meaning.

The play takes place in the course of a day and a half at the home of Rita and Alfred Allmers, who have a partly paralyzed son of nine, Eyolf. The boy became handicapped when he fell off a table after being left unattended while his parents were totally absorbed in making love. After this accident Alfred Allmers seems to have withdrawn from Rita both sexually and emotionally, and buried himself in his work on "human responsibility", which he considers his vocation and the great work of his life.  [Read more]
