Jon Fosse in Shanghai for the premiere of ‘Someone is going to come’

Last updated: 27/10/2010 // ‘Someone is going to come’ by Jon Fosse had its premiere at Shanghai Theatre Academy on the 26th of October. Jon Fosse himself attended the premiere of the play, which was the first professional stage production of Jon Fosse in China.

The brilliant Chinese actors ensured that the premiere became a great success. Jon Fosse was very satisfied with the production. After the play he said that it was the best stage production of ‘Someone is going to come’ he had ever seen. The audience was also excited, and lively discussed the theme of the play.

The day before the premiere, Jon Fosse attended a press conference at Shanghai Theatre Academy. He told the crowd that he was honored to be in Shanghai, and that he hoped the Chinese audience would enjoy his play. During the press conference he elaborated on his works, in particular the play ‘Someone is going to come’. He discussed the idea behind the theme of the play, and explained the significance of expecting something. Fosse also expressed that he prefer to write his plays in a poetic manner – as drama is a poem that stands up.

Consul, Bjørn Blokhus, was present at the press conference, and embraced Jon Fosses work, describing him as Norway’s most prominent contemporary dramatist.  His work has been translated into more than 40 languages, and his plays have been performed on stages all over the world including, London, New York, Paris, Copenhagen, Toronto to mention a few.

Director He Yan, Ibsen International and The Royal Norwegian Consulate General have been behind this first professional stage production of Jon Fosse in China.
