Norwegian EXPO 2010 pavilion will showcase sustainability

Norway recently signed the contract with the EXPO 2010 organisation in Shanghai. Vice Minister for Trade and Industry Mr. Oyvind Slaake attended the ceremony. The site for the pavilion has thereby been officially handed over, and the work of the pavilion can now begin.

The Norwegian concept for EXPO 2010 is "Norway - Powered by Nature". Most Norwegian cities are close to the sea, forests or mountains, and the country will show how these cities invite nature into the city and use nature to improve the quality of life.

Mr. Slaake was very impressed by the work done by the Shanghai EXPO organisation in planning for the event. "This is an important landmark for our participation at EXPO 2010", said Slaake.
"We consider participation at EXPO 2010 as important for our long term efforts towards a strengthened relationship with China. Norway aims at further developing relations with China in areas such as business, culture, research and development".

The Norwegian concept for EXPO 2010 gives a broad interpretation of sustainable development that links the use of resources and energy conversation, social aspects and identity to the innovative architecture of the pavilion. Visitors will be invited for a walk through a pavilion consisting of 15 "trees" which will give a solid interpretation of Norway's varied landscapes.

"The Norwegian government hopes to keep the "trees" in China after EXPO as a "symbol of friendly relations between the two countries", said Mr. Arild Blixrud who is the Acting Commissioner General of Norway at the EXPO.

The Norwegian participation is organised as a joint venture between the public and private sectors. Det Norske Veritas, the Kongsberg Group ASA, Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA, StatoilHydro ASA and the tourism sector have already confirmed their participation in the project.

"This will be a very exciting project. The theme of the Shanghai EXPO, Better City Better "Life, is both timely and important, and with a clear, universal element. For Norway it suits our national and international priorities very well. We have participation from both the private and public sectors and we have a great concept", said Mr. Slaake.
