CIRD - A think tank for China Reform in 20 years

Last updated: 25/11/2011 // October 28th-30th 2011 a conference on “Surmounting Middle Income Trap –China in the Next Decade” organized by China Institute for Reform and Development (CIRD) together with Deutsche Gesellshaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, China International Centre for Economic and Technical Exchange and United Nations Development Programme was held in Haikou, Hainan Province.

The conference gathered over 400 participants. Norway was represented by Senior Researcher Jon Naustdalslid, former director of Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR); Tormod C. Endresen, Consul General, Norwegian Consulate General Guangzhou and Kari Kveseth, Counsellor of Science and Higher Education, Norwegian Embassy Beijing.

World Economic Outlook and China in the Next Decade, Emerging Economies in the Complex Changes in the World Economy and China’s Transformation of Development Models and Choice of Reforms are among the major themes addressed in the conference.

Chi Fulin, President of CIRD, underlined in his talks the challenges economic planning was meeting today, the complex changes we see in the global economy, China was becoming an integrated partner of the global economy and that think tanks as CIRD was necessary to bring global aspects, experience and expertise into the future development of China´s policy.

CIRD cooperates with NIBR, a cooperation supported by the Norwegian Embassy and the Research Council of Norway. CIRD/NIBR has since 2005 arranged the annual joint Forum for reforms in China.  The next one will be arranged Dec 10-11 in Haikou, focusing on Prioritizing the Growth of Peoples Income and Wealth and Consumption-driven Growth.

CIRD also celebrated its 20th anniversary during the conference. Central and local officials as well as foreign guests were present at the celebration and underlined the importance of CIRD’s contributions to the reforming and economic transformation of China in the last decades.
