The future collaboration between our countries will focus on scientific observations at Arctic Yellow River Station located in Svalbard, the International Polar Year 2007 and Svalbard as a base of research and education.
Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC) in Shanghai, established in 1989, is the only institution dedicated to polar research in China. PRIC is an institute under The State Oceanic Administration, and conduct research activities within Polar Oceanographic Science, Polar Biological Science, Polar Upper Atmospheric Physics and Polar Glaciology. They run 4 research facilities: The icebraker “MV Xuelong”, Antarctic Great Wall Station located at west Antarctica, Antarctic Zhongshan Station at east Antarctica and Arctic Yellow River Station in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard.
In October 2006 a new 5 year agreement was signed on academic exchange and cooperation between Faculty of Science, University of Tromsø, Norway and Polar Research Institute of China. The renewed agreement promotes the development of research and other academic activities on both sides, such as exchange of faculty members and graduate students for research and study, joint research, exchange of scholars for lectures and exchange of information.
