Royal Norwegian Embassy Newsletter JanuaryDear all, Christmas is upon us and 2010 is just around the corner. The Embassy will start off the New Year with Ridderrennet in Changchun on Jan 1. What exactly is Ridderrennet? Ridderrennet is a cross-country ski race for disabled persons, a competition for disabled athletes from all over the world. Ridderrennet is about spirit; spirit to cross boundaries and never give up despite difficulties. The Ridderrennet motto is “making the impossible possible”, and provides a unique possibility for disabled people to challenge themselves and their physical disabilities. It proves that sport is for everybody, young and old, people from China, Norway or elsewhere, people with different types and degrees of disabilities. It is all about sport being fun; challenging and rewarding no matter if you are a professional athlete or a first-time skier. The race has a long tradition in Norway, first time held in 1964, and has gradually grown to be a major part of winter sport events in Norway. Ridderrennet is now held annually in Norway with more than 500 skiers from up to 20 nations. Ridderrennet China 2005 had 27 disabled athletes’ participants; this year there will be over 100 disabled athletes participating in Ridderrennet China 2010. Robert Løken, a Norwegian, has been walking along the Great Wall for almost ten months. He is now in Shaanxi and has still a few months to go before he reaches Shanhaiguan. 2010 will be the year of Expo.
