Norway is increasing its support for flood victims in Pakistan to NOK100 million. The flood disaster in Pakistan is an enormous humanitarian crisis. It has affected 14 million people, six million of whom are in need of emergency food assistance. So far, 288 000 homes have been washed away.

Pakistan is experiencing its worst floods in 80 years. According to the UN, over a million people are affected by the flooding, and reports suggest that almost 1100 people have lost their lives. “Norway is providing NOK 30 million to support emergency relief efforts during this critical phase,” Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said.

“I am concerned about the situation in Kyrgyzstan. Large numbers of people in the south of the country have been caught up in the recent violence, resulting in urgent humanitarian needs. Norway stands ready to help those who are being affected by this difficult situation,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Norway and Indonesia agreed today to enter into a partnership to support Indonesia’s efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation of forests and peat lands. Indonesia will take immediate and decisive action to reduce its forest and peat related greenhouse gas emissions. Norway will support those efforts with one billion USD over the next few years.

The 35 ton anchor has been purchased by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and will be placed in front of the Museum’s new building at Central. The Norwegian Government will finance the transport of the anchor to Hong Kong, as a token of the longstanding maritime ties between Hong Kong and Norway. The world’s largest ship, ex Seawise Giant and Jahre Viking, was owned by Hong Kong and subsequently Norwegian owners.

Today agreement has been reached between the Norwegian and the Russian negotiating delegations on the bilateral maritime delimitation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean, said Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

Today the Government will present a white paper on nuclear safety cooperation with Russia in the High North.

Norway is providing NOK 2 million to China following the earthquake on 14 April. The money is to go to the Chinese Red Cross.

Thursday March 18 there will be a press conference in Beijing on the recent seminar and upcoming conference concerning Chinese and Norwegian cooperation in offshore wind power.
