The donation will be marked at a ceremony at Hong Kong Maritime Museum in Stanley at 1030 Monday 24 May, attended by Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Trond Giske, Mr. C C Tung, President of the Orient Overseas Container Line and Anthony Hardy, Chairman of the Board of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.
The ex Seawise Giant / Jahre Viking was built in 1979 in Japan and sold to C. Y. Tung, the founder of the Orient Overseas Container Line, who enlarged the ship and named it Seawise Giant. From 1991 to 2001 it was owned by Norwegian shipowner Jørgen Jahre. The vessel had an overall length of 458 meters and is considered the largest manmade moving object ever made.
Photo: Wallem Ship Management During its Norwegian ownership, the ex Jahre Viking was operated out of Hong Kong by the Wallem Group founded in China by a Norwegian entrepreneur about 110 years ago. I find it very appropriate, therefore, that Hong Kong become its anchor’s last port of call. I hope the anchor will serve as a symbol of Hong Kong’s significance as a port and shipping centre, and of the ties between Hong Kong and Norway in the maritime industry, says Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Mr. Giske.
