Norway elected to UN Human Rights Council

18/05/2009 // On the 12th of May Norway was elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for a three year term.

Norway will now be part of the regional group called "Western European and other States." Belgium and the USA were the other members to be elected into that 7-member regional group.

“I am pleased that Norway has now been elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council.”  ... "The aim of our engagement is clear. It is to ensure that individuals are better protected against abuse and have better access to the rights set out in existing standards and conventions in the field of human rights. As a member Norway aims to make a difference,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in a press release.

China, a founding member of the Human Rights Council since 2006, was re-elected for a three year term. "The fact that both Norway and China are now members of the Human Rights Council will enable us to further deepen our cooperation in the field of human rights and the rule of law," says Norway's Ambassador to China, H.E. Mr. Svein O. Sæther.
