Norwegian Participation at the Annual International Charity Sale

The seventh “Love Knows No Borders” annual charity sale was themed as “a Tribute to Rural Teachers in Yunnan”. More than 69 embassies, international organisations, as well as enterprises from China and abroad, were present at the annual International Charity Fair. The sale was hosted in the name of Madame Qian Wei, wife of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

“Love Knows No Borders” was initiated in 2009, and the six previous charity sales have raised more than 18 million RMB. The previous funds have been used to a variety of charitable projects, particularly, social relief and welfare programmes in poverty-stricken areas in provinces including Yunnan, Hebei, Gansu, Henan and Guizhou. This year’s focus was on rural teachers working under harsh conditions at primary and secondary schools in Jinping and Malipo counties in Yunnan province.

A team of four people from the Embassy represented Norway. The Norwegian stall sold Ibsen books, Norwegian inspired t-shirts, national souvenirs, and perhaps most importantly, Norwegian waffles. The waffles proved extremely popular and were sold out only a few hours after the charity sale was opened to public. The sale provided a unique opportunity for Chinese and other nationalities to come together and learn more about each other cultures.

The Norwegian stall attracted a great variety of people; whilst some had visited or lived in Norway over a longer period, others were simply curious about Norway as a country and was eager to learn more about Norwegian culture.

With more than 100 stalls showcasing and selling national souvenirs, food and other items, this year’s charity sale ended up raising approximately 2 million RMB.

We are looking very much forward to seeing you all again at next year’s “Love Knows No Borders” International Charity Sale and hope it will be as successful!
