Enlightening seminar on northern lights tourism conducted with the South Chinese travel sector

Last updated: 04.12.2013 // Prominent guests attended the informative session on spectacular features of the high north.

On Tuesday 12th of November, the venue was filled with curious travel agents, officials and journalists when the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in Guangzhou hosted a session of lectures on winter travelling in Northern Norway to see aurora borealis – northern lights, in cooperation with Scandinavian Tourism Board. Among the guests were several central figures in the tourism sector in Norway and Guangdong including Mr. Per-Arne Tuftin, Norwegian National Tourism Director of Innovation Norway, and Ms. Li Ruo Lan, Marketing & Promotion Director of Guangzhou Municipal Tourism Administration, attended the event.

After opening words by Norwegian Consul General Espen Rikter-Svendsen and a general brief on Norwegian nature and attractions by Mr. Steven Zhang of Scandinavian Tourist Board (STB), Chinese travel agents, officials and journalists were introduced by Mr. Jerry Liu to “the World’s most beautiful voyage” – Hurtigruten, a frequent choice for people wishing to see the unique phenomenon that lights up the arctic nights and has fascinated people for thousands of years.

This natural display of beauty is caused by electromagnetic radiation in the atmosphere after solar activity, and the attending guests were among other things lectured on the dynamics on the lights, how to predict them and thereby maximize the probability of seeing them during travel.

Tourists from South China are increasingly aware of Norwegian attractions, and Consul Kjersti Thue gave an explanation of the recent and rapid increase in visa applications to Norway, before the guests and hosts continued discussions over dinner. The feedback from the guests was very positive, and indicates a promising market for Norwegian tourism in Guangdong, South China and the country as a whole.
